Product Barcode Id: 00009254A sweet pair of late 18th century English color stipple engravings, "A Reaper's Child" and "A Gleaner's Child," after drawings by Richard Westall R.A. Both plates are inscribed "Drawn by R. Westall R.A." and "London Engraved and Published by M.no Bovi," dated May 1 and June 1, 1797, "No. 207 Piccadilly near St. James's Church." Mariano Bovi (1757-1813) was a Neapolitan engraver sent to London to train under the celebrated Francesco Bartolozzi, and he became known for color-printed stipple work published from his own shop on Piccadilly. Richard Westall (1765-1836) was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1794 and was one of the most sought-after illustrators of his day, later serving as drawing master to the young Princess Victoria.
The soft stipple tones are printed in color and believed to be period impressions. Each is presented in a classic wash-line mount with ink rules and colored bands, in a slim molded gilt frame. A lovely pair for a nursery, bedroom or cottage-style hallway.
