Romantic 19th century oil on canvas of a grand hilltop castle overlooking an alpine lake. A sunlit golden road winds up toward the castle gate, where a gentleman in a top hat and a lady riding sidesaddle make their way on horseback while a country woman walks ahead. Tall cypress and poplar trees rise beside the stone walls and spired towers, and beyond, a still blue lake stretches toward a lakeside town beneath soaring blue mountains and a soft, luminous sky. The scene is believed to show the Italian Lakes or the Savoy Alps, favorite subjects for painters following the Grand Tour. Signed lower right, the signature now too faint to read. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with a twisted rope border, beaded edges and scrolling acanthus corners, a beautiful match for the painting's warm golden palette! From France near Paris. About the artist: The painter is unrecorded, as the signature has faded beyond reading. The work belongs to the tradition of 19th century romantic landscape painting, when French, Swiss and Italian artists painted the castles, lakes and mountain passes of the Alps and northern Italy as picturesque views for travelers. The finely detailed figures, the warm golden light and the carefully layered mountains are hallmarks of this school.
