A noted Maine painter, portraitist, architect and conservationist, Muir studied at the Art Students League in New York and settled in Stonington, Maine in 1939, where she maintained her studio for more than sixty years. She was the first woman to serve on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, serving from 1955–1959.
