Striking 19th century French Louis Philippe giltwood mirror that pairs silver and gold leaf in one frame. The rounded outer molding is finished in silver leaf laid in a banded stripe pattern, while a deep inner slip in warm gold leaf curves into rounded corners around the glass, a lovely two-tone combination that sits happily with both silver and brass in a room.

Louis Philippe mirrors, named for the French king who reigned from 1830 to 1848, are prized for their clean, architectural lines and for leaf applied by hand over gesso and red bole, which peeks through here and there where the gilding has worn. Two-tone examples like this one, combining silver and gold, are less often seen than mirrors in a single finish.

At nearly 40 inches tall and over 31 inches wide, it is a handsome size above a fireplace, sideboard or chest of drawers, and equally at home in a classic or a contemporary room! From the South of France.
