French 19th Century Signed Oil Painting of a Shepherd in Giltwood Frame

A charming oil painting of a shepherd resting on a rocky outcrop, staff in hand, while his flock wanders the hillside behind him. Painted with a confident, textured touch, the scene opens onto a sweeping valley of heather-toned hills and distant blue mountains beneath a soft, cloud-filled sky. His russet waistcoat, teal breeches and weathered felt hat are beautifully observed, giving this small work real presence. The painting belongs to the 19th century European tradition of rustic genre scenes, when shepherds, herders and country folk at rest became beloved cabinet subjects, painted small to be enjoyed up close. Presented in a giltwood and gesso frame with a ribbed molding and stylized leaf ornaments at the center of each side, the gilding softened to a lovely crackled, time-worn patina.
