English Ridgway Eglinton Tournament Relief-Molded Stoneware Jug or Pitcher, circa 1840
Product Barcode Id: 00009255English relief-molded white stoneware jug or pitcher by W. Ridgway, Son & Co. of Hanley, Staffordshire, impressed on the base "Published by W. Ridgway, Son & Co. Hanley September 1 1840." The design celebrates the Eglinton Tournament of August 1839, when the Earl of Eglinton staged a full medieval joust at his castle in Ayrshire before some 100,000 spectators, famously washed out by a downpour. Armored knights charge on caparisoned horses beneath Gothic arches above a band of fruiting grapevines, with a rustic branch handle. The same jug is held in the collections of the V&A in London and the Yale Center for British Art. Price includes shipping!
