19th Century Pair of French Carved Armoire du Mariage Doors Stamped Cherbourg
Product Barcode Id: 00005003Lovely pair of 19th Century Armoire Du Marriage doors intricately carved! Could serve as a wonderful backdrop on a wall, over a bed, or installed within a bookcase to mask a television. An armoire of marriage was a traditional gift to a newlywed couple that dates back hundreds of years in France; this one is a particularly wonderful example of skilled craftsmanship to create a master work that was literally designed to last for centuries! Each of the two top corners a bold sculpture of a basket brimming with fresh fruit symbolizing fertility, with exquisite carvings of love birds appear toward the center. The lower halves depict wonderfully done wildflower sprays in relief. Note the hand carved detail in the original finely detailed gold key guards. The remainder of the design on both doors is quite tailored, with raised and recessed panels on each side, and a straight base molding. Circa 1870s. Bought in the South of France!
