Lovely American oil on canvas by Portland, Maine painter Joseph B. Kahill (1882-1957), signed and dated "J.B. Kahill, 1951" at lower right. A snow-covered country road, rutted with sled and wheel tracks, winds downhill between slender birches and a tall pine toward a sunlit valley of russet and gold, with a frozen pond glinting below and blue mountains rising to a snow-capped peak beyond. Kahill builds the snow with thick, confident impasto, laying violet-blue shadows against warm cream highlights so the whole road seems to sparkle in the low winter sun. A true New England winter scene, presented in a wide molded wood frame with a softly limed finish. Price includes shipping!

A wonderful piece for a Maine cottage, a ski house or a cozy library, where its warm valley tones and crisp blue shadows glow beside a winter fire.

About the artist: Joseph B. Kahill was born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1882 and came to the United States in 1898, settling in Portland, Maine, where he spent his career. He was best known as a portrait painter, commissioned by many of Maine's leading citizens; his portraits of Portland philanthropist James Phinney Baxter are in the collection of the Maine Historical Society, and his work is also held by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. A member of the Portland Society of Artists, he is said to have studied with Richard E. Miller, Jules Prinet and Raphaël Collin, and alongside his portraits he painted the snowy Maine countryside he knew so well.
