British Antique Scrubbed Pine School Bench
Product Barcode Id: 00005088
English long pine bench with carved shaped legs from early 20th century. This beautiful pine bench features a long rectangular seat which rests on two carved legs. The top of this bench is made from a single sturdy piece of pine, and on each side is a solid plank comprising the side aprons; the bench's solid construction allows several people to sit at the same time. The material of the bench and its shape suggest that it was intended to be inside a school or dwelling and likely associated with a table. Such benches were common as they were less costly than chairs, could sit more people along the table, and moving one bench was easier than moving three or four chairs, particularly important in dwellings where rooms played multiple roles. As such this style of bench was popular in homes with large families or frequent visitors. Set in an entrance or in a hallway, this circa 1900 - 1920 English/British pine bench could suggest the welcoming side of any home.
