A pair of French Rebus Puzzle dessert plates, transfer printed in violet and black on a white semi-porcelain body. When solved, the picture puzzle spells out a wise saying or maxim. From the early 1800s into the early 1900s, most French homes had a set of Rebus dessert plates. Solving the puzzle provided entertainment and conversation to the table after a traditionally long meal. The solution to each puzzle is printed on the verso of the plate. circa 1841-1876, marked H&B de Choisy, for the French faïence factory of Choisy-le-Roi, H. Boulenger & Cie. Two cracks; structurally sound. Make a great wall display!
