french-louis-xv-provincial-walnut-game-table-gallery-top
French Louis XV Provincial Walnut Game Table or Side Table with Gallery Top and Opposite Drawers

Elegant and classic French Louis XV provincial game table in warm walnut, believed to date to the late 18th or early 19th century. The nearly square top is framed by a raised molded gallery, the traditional tray edge that kept cards and counters from sliding away, and it has mellowed to a rich, glowing patina with lovely figure in the grain. A small drawer at each end, with turned wooden knobs, once held game counters and candles. Below, a gently scalloped apron sits on four slender cabriole legs, with pegged joinery that speaks to its handmade country origins. Perfect as a game or card table, beside a favorite reading chair, or as a petite writing table in a sunny corner! From the west of Paris, France.

KEY FEATURES

Style / Period: Louis XV provincial

Wood / Materials: Believed to be walnut, with a rich patina

Construction: Hand-built, with pegged mortise-and-tenon joints

Hardware: Turned wooden knobs on a small drawer at each end

Top: Nearly square, framed by a raised molded gallery

DETAILS

Country: France

Condition: Very Good

Year: Early 19th Century/Late 18th Century

Dimensions: H 26.75" x H skirt 22" x W 28.5" x D 26.25"
